Habitat & Diet |
Proboscis monkeys are strictly arboreal and are almost never found far from water. They sleep in trees directly overhanging rivers to protect themselves from land predators like clouded leopards. Their diet is intensely specialized: they possess a complex, multi-chambered stomach—much like a cow—filled with unique bacteria to break down tough leaves and neutralize toxins found in certain plants. Because of this specialized digestive system, eating easily fermentable, sweet, ripe fruits can actually be fatal to them.

Unlike most apes and monkeys, proboscis monkeys love the water. They actually have partially webbed toes and fingers, allowing them to outswim predators like crocodiles. They are known to leap from high branches straight into rivers with a massive belly flop.

Field Notes |

Captured at Changlong Safari Park, these portraits offer a close-up look at one of the primate world’s most extreme examples of sexual dimorphism. The adult male features a massive, pendulous nose, while the female possesses a much smaller, sharply upturned nose. Natively, these monkeys inhabit the dense, humid mangrove swamps and riverine forests of Borneo, making them highly specialized—and highly vulnerable—creatures.

Conservation Status |
The Proboscis Monkey is listed as Endangered, with populations plummeting by more than 50% over the last 40 years. Because they are endemic to Borneo and require highly specific coastal and riverine habitats, they are incredibly sensitive to habitat loss. The rapid clearing of mangrove swamps and rainforests for timber, settlement, and large-scale palm oil plantations has severely fragmented their territory, isolating populations and drastically reducing their food supply.

How You Can Help |
Protecting the Proboscis monkey means protecting Borneo’s forests. Supporting organizations that fight deforestation and choosing products made with certified sustainable palm oil (RSPO) are the most direct ways to help preserve their home.
